Our 22nd season began with “Winter is Coming”. The Boston Classical Review wrote:

Under Lester’s direction, Seraphim Singers took a convincingly cool, at times stoic approach, yet one rooted in an impressive union of concept and sound.

Jonathan Blumhofer of the Boston Classical Review noted of our May 2019 concert:

Saturday’s performances of all three works were directed and intense. The Kilstofte’s climaxes were rich and well-balanced, while Sharpe’s setting was marked by warm-toned singing and discreet attention to dynamics. The Singers’ account of the agile wooddove motive in the Hill was likewise securely etched.

Reviewing our November 2018 concert, Anne Davenport of the Boston Musical Intelligencer wrote:

Beginning with God Speaks to Each of Us, Gwyneth Walker’s 1999 setting of a poem by Rilke, “Divine Encounters” brought to First Church Cambridge Saturday an atmosphere of excellence, discovery, and beauty that is the hallmark of Seraphim Singers’ concerts.

And Aaron Keebaugh of the Boston Classical Review wrote:

The Seraphim Singers sang each work with aplomb. Strong in all sections, this forty-member chorus is capable of an attractive and fluent balance that rivals Boston’s best vocal ensembles.

Our 2016-2017 season was a success and garnered praise from critics and audience alike. Following our 20thAnniversary concert on April 30, Seraphim friend and concertgoer Richard B. commented:

You paint with such an expressive palette, achieving subtleties and tremendous contrasts of dynamics and color. Every single piece was delectable, a true feast for the heart, mind, and ears.

The Boston Musical Intelligencer led their review of the 20th Anniversary concert with:

The ensemble under Jennifer Lester met the challenges of contrapuntal complexity, double choruses, pungent harmonies, and long a cappella stretches with soaring ease.

In the world premiere of his Annunciation (a Seraphim commission in celebration of its 20th anniversary), James Woodman’s vivid text painting of Edwin Muir’s poetry, both for the strong accompanying organ part and for the chorus, set up a lively competition between vocal pipes and organ pipes that awakened [the audience].

James Woodman, from whom we commissioned “The Annunciation” in commemoration of our 20th year, expressed “gratitude and profound artistic satisfaction at [the premiere]. The whole show was marvelous.”

Throughout the season, we performed several additional pieces by living composers.  Of our February performance at St. Cecilia’s Parish in Boston, Zachary Wadsworth commented:

“Thank you so much for a wonderful concert and a great performance of Earthquake! It has been so wonderful to be a part of your season this year, and I absolutely love the energy and passion that your singers bring to their performances. And Heinrich was wonderful, too – a lovely organ, and a lovely space.”
